The University of California, San Francisco Department of Dermatology is now accepting applicants for a Complex Medical Dermatology Fellowship year that emphasizes the development of advanced clinical skills in inpatient and outpatient complex medical dermatology in a highly mentored environment. During this year, the participant will work in the complex medical dermatology resident continuity clinic, autoimmunity clinic, complex medical dermatology faculty practices, and the inpatient wards. The participant will also have protected academic time for scientific development in line with his/her own interests.
The year is divided between outpatient clinics focused on complex medical dermatology and inpatient wards. The clinical experience provides sufficient exposure so the participant will be able to artfully manage patients with the full spectrum of severe dermatoses. Specific goals include the acquisition of expertise in 1) caring for outpatients with complex medical conditions such as autoimmune blistering diseases, rheumatologic/dermatologic diseases, severe eczema, severe psoriasis, cutaneous diseases with systemic manifestations, 2) using systemic immunosuppressants and biologics to treat complex medical dermatologic conditions, 3) the evaluation and management of skin disorders in critically ill hospitalized patients, and 4) the management of hospitalized patients with severe dermatologic diseases
In addition to clinical training, the year provides 50% protected time for career development activities, including finding and developing a niche within medical dermatology. It is expected that the participant will conduct research and complete publications in his/her area of interest.
The ideal participant is someone planning or just beginning a career in academic medical dermatology. Applicants must have completed dermatology residency by the fellowship start date. We are looking for appropriate applicants for an estimated start date of August 1, 2022. Applications will need to be completed in full by September 1, 2021.
